To some degree I would have to disagree with this. I feel like the mindset directing his statement is that his choices and their effects/outcomes only affect himself, or that he's only concerned with how his choices affect himself.
If choice I make involve or affect others, then I feel like their expectations should have some sort of impact. Others' experiences, preferences, and expectations are all things I can seek to understand, and if part of my goals are to develop and grow relationships with these people, then they should be involved with my choices.
If however, I'm living for myself then of course I shouldn't be as affected by social pressures.
